Check Point
🦗 Junior Entomologist Field Guide
Why Observe Bugs?
Insects are the most diverse group of animals on Earth. Observing them helps children learn to respect
nature, understand ecosystems, and develop scientific skills like identification and classification.
This sheet is your first step into the world of biology.
🔍 Observation Check Points
- Counting Legs: The key to classification.
- 0 Legs: Could be an annelid (worm) or reptile (snake).
- 6 Legs: The definition of an Insect (Ants, Beetles,
Butterflies).
- 8 Legs: These are Arachnids (Spiders, Scorpions).
- Many Legs: Myriapods (Centipedes, Millipedes).
- Body Parts: Look for antennae, wings, and body segments (Head, Thorax, Abdomen).
⚠️ Safety First
Reminder: "Look with your eyes, not your hands." Avoid touching brightly colored insects or hairy
caterpillars, as they may sting or cause irritation.
💡 Questions to Ask
- "How does it move? Does it crawl, jump, or fly?"
- "Where did you find it? In the dark soil or on a sunny leaf?"
- "What is it doing? Looking for food or resting?"
